It
sounds all too familiar; it is Day 1 of racing at the Laser
Masters World Championships and it’s pelting with rain,
the earlier 10-15 south-easterly breeze has vanished, in
its place a big fat gray cloud (read no wind) sits over the
Laser Radial fleet, their scheduled 12.00pm warning signal
delayed whilst race officials wait for breeze.
Whatever
happened to the Eastern Australian summer where lovely warm
nor-east breezes of varying strengths prevailed? We
have only seen one day of north-easterlies this month and
the weather is cool for summer.
The
Standard fleets have been held onshore and won’t leave
The Haven at Terrigal until approximately the first races
in the first group have been completed.
As the
Standard Masters division has 101 competitors, they have
been divided into two groups and will sail a qualifier and
final series. The top half on the scoreboard at the
end of the qualifying series will go through to the Gold
fleet while the remaining sailors will sail in the Silver
fleet.
Due
to the large numbers sailing (367 all up), there will be
seven separate start groups for each race, starting with
Reef Restaurant Races 1 and 2 in what is expected to be a
long day for all. Further details can be found in the
Sailing Instructions at the official website below.
